Visit with us the most beautiful Christmas markets in Switzerland, romantic squares, beautifully decorated house facades and festively decorated city centers. When eyes light up, soft Christmas music plays and the smell of fresh roasted almonds and hot punch or mulled wine is in your nose, then an Advent market is probably nearby.
Switzerland has many wonderful markets at Advent time. Both in the larger cities like Basel, Bern, Zurich or Lucerne as well as in the historic small towns or in the countryside. We would like to introduce you to a few of the most famous markets.
The most beautiful Advent and Christmas markets in Switzerland:
Basel – The city on the Rhine, has two picturesque Christmas markets with the Barfüsserplatz and the Münsterplatz. On the latter stands a magnificent Christmas tree decorated by the famous decorator Johann Wanner. The Basel Christmas market is considered one of the most beautiful and largest Swiss Christmas markets, which is why it is our first choice.
Zurich – Zurich has a Christmas market to suit every taste. Whether at the urban “Wiehnachtsdorf” near Bellevue on Sechseläutenplatz, in the middle of Zurich’s main train station around the sparkling 15-meter Christmas tree or in the romantic old town, the so-called “Niederdorf”, every visitor is guaranteed to find his favorite Christmas market. Our tip: The small market on Werdmühleplatz. The “Singing Christmas Tree” enchants you with its daily concerts, creating a very special atmosphere.
Montreux – Montreux Noël under palm trees. Right on the shores of Lake Geneva, the Promenade Street is transformed into one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. Around 170 beautifully decorated little huts and chalets are lined up along the Riviera. The special feature of the Christmas market in Montreux is the flying Santa Claus. Every day at 5, 6 and 7 p.m., and on Saturdays at 4 p.m., he flies over the grounds in his sleigh and reindeer team.

Chur – And in Graubünden, too, people are getting in the mood for the Christmas season. The Christmas market in Chur is one of the most atmospheric and, with around 160 market stalls, one of the largest Christmas markets in Switzerland. The festively illuminated old town invites you to stroll around. Here you will find regional products and handmade Christmas gifts for family and friends. What must not be missing in the Grisons, of course, a fresh Bünder barley soup and a hot mulled wine to go with it.
Winterthur – The “Chlausenumzug” in Winterthur not only attracts numerous visitors, but also hundreds of Santa Clauses who gather for a parade. In addition, there are decorated Christmas houses and all kinds of goodies on Neumarkt Square in the middle of Winterthur’s old town.
